Launching

Good news to all of you. We are going to launch our 'Growing Up Green' campaign on our assembly this Monday (30/08/2010). So, be there. You sure don't want to miss this great project by us, the 4 Science 2 students.

Fact

Recycling 1 Ton of paper saves :

  • 17 mature trees
  • 3 cubic yards of landfill space
  • 2 barrels of oil; and
  • 4,100 kw hours of electricity (enough to power a home for 5 months)
  • 500,000 – number of trees cut down to produce each week’s Sunday newspapers
  • 25,000,000 – number of trees saved a year IF every American recycled just 1/10 of their newspapers
  • 75,000 – number of trees saved recycling a single run of the Sunday New York Times
  • 250,000,000 – number of trees saved if all our newspaper was recycled
  • The average American uses 7 trees a year
  • 1 Billion – estimated number of trees worth of paper thrown away every year in the US
  • 85,000,000 Tons - amount of paper Americans use per year
  • 17 trees saved can absorb a total of 250 pound of carbon dioxide; burning 17 trees would create 1500 pounds of carbon dioxed
  • More than 56% of paper consumed in the US in ’07 was recycled! That equals 360 pounds for each person in the Country!
  • 400 paper mills use recovered materials for their paper producing process
This is just in America, not yet the other countries. Think about it and start doing your part !

Help the planet

  1. Change to Fluorescent Bulbs - If every house in the United States changed all of the light bulbs in their house, that would be equivalent to taking one million cars off the streets.
  2. Don't Rinse - Skip rinsing your plates before putting them into the dishwasher. In average you will save 15 gallons of water per load. Plus, you will save time.
  3. Hang Outside to Dry - Get a cloths line or rack to dry your cloths. Your cloths will last longer and you will save money
  4. Turn off computers at night - don't just put them to sleep. You will save an average of 4 cents a day which ads up to $14.60 a year.
  5. Use Both Sides of Paper - if you have a printer with a double sided print option use it. You will save half of the amount of paper you would have normally used.

Then when your done bring it to the recycle bin.
  6. Get rid of baths - Don't take baths, take showers. You will in average save about half the amount of water that you would if you were taking a bath.
  7. Don't get bottled water - Instead of bottled water get a reusable container to carry water. Also you can get a filter to make your home tap taste more like bottled water. It is definitely more cost efficient.
  8. Turn the water off when you brush - Your parents have said this before, now I say it. You will save 4 gallons of water doing this alone.
  9. Shorten your shower - Every minute you cut from your shower is roughly 5 gallons of water. The less time your shower takes, the lower your impact on the environment.
  10. Recycle Glass - If you do not recycle this, it will take a million years to decompose.

Green Ideas

Go For Laptop

Switch to a laptop instead of using a desktop computer and cut three-quarters off your electrical use. Turn off the laptop at the end of the day.

Saving in air conditioning

Each degree you turn down the heat saves 3 percent of heating costs, while each degree you raise the temperature of your air conditioner saves 3-4 percent of cooling costs. By changing the temperature by 2 degrees all year, you can save about 2,000 pounds of C02 a year.

Paper Waste

*as recommended by our Pn. Charngeet :) *

The last day of school is approaching, do you think this is too crazy? I find it so disgusting how many half used notebooks get tossed into the trash can or recycling bin at the end of the year. Even when they are recycled it takes energy to process the notebook paper to make new products. Here, take them home and rip out all the unused pages, cut off the \"frilly part\" and then keep a box full of notebook paper for the next school year.

Too Many Shopping Bags?

Sometimes, whether we like it or not, we end up accumulating too many plastic bags--either from grocery shopping or from other shops. While many people make an effort to use re-usable grocery bags, at times there is just no other choice than to accept plastic shopping bags. So what can we do with all those plastic shopping bags? We can reduce the amount of plastic bags entering in the land fill by simply doing this idea!

Renewable energy

So what’s so great about renewable energy? Right now we use a lot of coal and oil for energy, but we can’t reuse these fuels. Once they’re gone they’re gone. Burning these fuels causes major pollution problems and increases global warming. Renewable energy is energy that won’t go away and will always be there to use again and again. The wind, the sun and even ocean waves are examples of clean renewable energy. We are now finding ways to make lots of power from clean renewable energy, so we will have a safer, healthier planet.

Simple ways to save our planet

Following can keep you fit and save planet :

1. Use staircase instead of lifts at home and office.

2. When you feel like changing TV channels do not use remotes, manually change it on the buttons present on it which makes you move from place frequently.

3.Walk or cycle to nearby places instead of taking bike or car.
